What is Fluoride?
To grasp fluoride treatment, you need to know what fluoride is first. Facts about the procedure won’t make sense to you otherwise.
Fluoride is a natural mineral found in water and various foods. When applied to your teeth, it can rebuild or “re-mineralize” their enamel layer. This effect makes the enamel stronger, greatly reducing your risk of tooth decay. Dentistry thus relies on fluoride to prevent cavities, often including it in products like toothpaste and mouthwash.
Given the above, fluoride treatment applies fluoride directly to your teeth. Its role is to strengthen your smile and help it resist harmful bacteria.
How Does Fluoride Treatment Work?
A fluoride treatment is usually done at the end of a dental cleaning. That way, it’s better able to reach your enamel and enhance your smile.
Fluoride treatment itself is relatively brief, only involving a couple of steps. A hygienist simply “paints” a fluoride varnish onto your teeth with a swab or brush. (Alternatively, a fluoride foam or gel may be placed in a mouthguard that fits over your teeth.) The entire procedure typically takes only a few minutes.
Once the treatment is over, our dental team will provide you with aftercare instructions. (An example would be to not eat or drink for 30 minutes, as doing so stops your teeth from absorbing the fluoride.) You should also expect to feel a sticky coating on your teeth. However, this sensation will fade after a day or so.
Who Benefits from Fluoride Treatment Most?
Fluoride treatment can help almost anyone. Even so, it does benefit some patients more than others.
Ideal candidates for fluoride treatment are those at high risk of tooth decay. Therefore, people with the following traits stand to greatly benefit:
- Dry mouth
- Gum disease
- A family history of cavities
- An acidic or sugary diet
- Old fillings
